The dreaded H1N1.. , do I have a really bad cold... or the Flu?

It came on over the weekend.. and at first I thought, dang.. I caught a cold.

So I canceled all weekend fun, did pretty much zero. I did make that trip to the feed store Saturday. I was feeling worse as the day progressed, and that was pretty much it.

By Saturday night... bad sore throat, cough coming on that made me hurt, and a headache. Still thinking, bad cold. I have not had a cold or flu for a long time, so thought that it was my turn I guess.

Today, worse cough, chills and so tired. So after talking to "Nurse" daughter...I was told this sounds more like the dreaded flu. Oh double crap, not fun.

I took my temperature, 100.6, dang this sucks.

So thank goodness for the Internet, time to do some research. You know, most people who get this flu, have it like any other flu, in other words survive it!

I have read that you may not have all the symptoms, such as vomiting (I have dodged that bullet so far)...

So per the Mayo Clinic:

"Symptoms

By Mayo Clinic staff

Swine flu symptoms in humans are similar to those of infection with other flu strains:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Body aches
  • Headache
  • Chills
  • Fatigue
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting

Swine flu symptoms develop three to five days after you're exposed to the virus and continue for about eight days, starting one day before you get sick and continuing until you've recovered.

When to see a doctor
It's not necessary to call a doctor if you're generally healthy and you develop swine flu symptoms, such as fever, cough and body aches. Do call your doctor, however, if you have flu symptoms and you're pregnant or you have a chronic disease, such as emphysema or a heart condition"

I have called my boss, who I think is happy I am not bringing my little bug to work.. though, I am not happy about using sick days. Oh well. I am sick...and cant wait to be "normal".

So for the rest of you, keep doing this:

And use this ....

  1. Oh! Feel better - and look on the bright side: now that you've got it - you are developing antibodies and won't get it again! Have Tamis make you some chicken soup too. In the words of Jewish grandmothers everywhere, "It couldn't hurt"....

  2. My son came home from a convention in Seattle last month sick. Over 100 confirmed cases of swine flu were reported within 48 hours. No one died :) He didn't go to the dr, just waited it out. A few days later and he was fine; no different than any other flu!

  3. Oh darn! Bummer! Yes, I remember that a headache is a prety sure sign you've got the flu instead of a cold. Thank goodness for the internet, though. Something to keep entertained while resting and you so you don't feel all alone.

I was just thinking the other day how lucky pregnant women on bed-rest are these days. When I was on bed rest with my twins 13 years ago, computers, chat groups, blogs, etc weren't even around, and I felt so isolated being stuck in bed.

    Feel better my friend!

(Oh and I'm also thankful for the internet because I can visit you, without having to 'adopt' your little bug. lol!)

  4. Oh and just a note, from what I've read and seen on the news, getting this strain of the flu doesn't guarantee that you're immune from catching the flu. I don't mean to bring anyone down, but you could be sick with a different strain of flu all winter long and still not be immune because the virus keeps morphing and changing. Even this Swine Flu could and probably will morph and change into something similar but even more agressive soon, or at least by the next flu season. The virus must do that to survive.

That's why every year when the vax are given out, they are different. You can't just get a flu vax and expect to last several years. Every year the virus becomes something different.

    Feel better!

  5. and push fluids to thin secretions...please do not forget that! Feel better! Chicken soup is great, the imunoglobulins from the bones are good for recovery. That is why homemade is best...and yes it is on the stove already being made, Linda you read my mind!

  6. I'm so sorry your have the bug. I had two women with a small boy at work last night in the deli and he had a terrible cough. Mom said he was just learning to cough in his arm. They were there 15 min. She said he just got over the Swine flu. I was really upset. What was she thinking. I wanted to say something to her, but didn't know if I would get in trouble from management. Some people just don't have common sense. I sure hope I don't get it. You take care of yourself.

  8. The key I think is to stay home, and rest...just give up, and take care of yourself. Computer will keep you connected....lemon and honey will help.

  9. Sorry to hear you're sick Sis! I just got back from Mexico and saw no sign of illness there... other than some people wearing masks on the airplane.

  10. I think I had it 2 weeks ago! I had the bad cough, slight sore throat, bit of a head, no energy but never a fever. It was about a week before I felt better. Of course...I think I got it from the grandkids! I also think I had it last spring down in the desert because it was very simular...not as bad for me as the regular flu. Fell better soon!

  11. I hope you are feeling better real quick!
When I got that nasty cold about a month ago, everyone kept saying that it could be the swine flu. I never had a fever and it felt just like all the other colds I always get. I haven't had a real flu case in probably 13 years. Now that I don't work with the public, I am hoping I don't get it. Although the barns farrier came in last week sick, he thought he was coming down with what his kids had, but don't know if it was the swine flu.
