Sepia Saturday...Snow and more...

After seeing the theme  for this weeks Sepia Saturday...I knew I had some family pictures that fit the theme of snow, long coats and more...and my mom is in each of them.

Being from the midwest, I should have a lot more snow pictures then I do. My brother has many of the pictures of my father, so you will see that mine show mom. I need to get the pictures of dad, and get them scanned for my family to have too.

What has amazed me when I look at pictures from this era, is how everyone was almost  always dressed to the "T"s!

My mother, Gloria  in the early 40's, yes in Minnesota. The above photo is unique, as she wore skirts more often then not, so one with her in pants is unusual for this period of her life.

This is an earlier shot with my mother on the left, her favorite cousin next to her, then her little sister Carol and her mother Agnes.

Her mother had many sisters, so my mother was surrounded by aunts and cousins. Her mothers family lived very close to each other in St Paul, in fact she had an aunt who lived across the street.

With the snowstorms they are having in the Northeast,  I imagine it won't be hard to get some perfect shots NOW for this theme!

Now another shot of mom and my sister Chrys in 1998, on a trip we made to Scandinavia in 1998. This is when we were in Finland for a couple days...the ships on this overnight cruise ship take you through the Baltic from Stockholm to Helsinki, I would of loved to spend more time then we had.

My next shot is me, in a snowstorm we had a few years back. In the Pacific NW the world stops when it snows. Schools close, people do not  go to work, every one panics.

Thanks for visiting!

  1. What great photos even with all the snow! Ha! Ha! Your mother is so pretty- they all looked dressed to do the town- and happy faces too!

  2. I'm not surprised everything stops, with the quantities of snow you're having, but I would have thought with meteorology as it is today they could tell it's coming and everyone stay at home ... no panic?

  3. Men in long coats look sinister, women, on the other hand, look so much more approachable.

I was interested to see that "....the world stops when it snows. Schools close, people do not go to work, every one panics....." in the Pacific N W - I thought that was a peculiarly British thing. We do it on a dusting, how much does it take in the PNW?

You don't look panicky in pic 6, in fact you look as if you are having fun and enjoying yourself.

    1. Mike, I think we are very simular here as the British are...not much snow scares people here. The added dilemma is we get power outages due to trees falling on power lines, etc. We have a generator and have had outages for as long as 6 days due to a 36" snow storm.

Of course the skiers are in heaven when it snows and run to the mountains for fun.

I am content in the picture...because I stayed home from work!

  4. That is a very charming picture with your Mum on the sled! Thanks for sharing.

  5. Thanks for sharing your photos.Your Mum does look very stylish!

  6. Hi Jan, what wonderful photos! Your Mom is so pretty. All those nylons and dresses back then. I laughed about what you said about snow in the PNW ... it is so true, at least on the other side of the mountains, in "the valley".

Thanks for stopping by to see me.

    Kathy M.

  7. Nice photos! I didn't post any family photos this week, but I have a couple of my mother and snow that I may post next week.

  8. A great collection of images linked together by snow and smiles.

  9. Gloria knew how to dress, especially for the snow! Some nicely posed shots here too.

  10. We panic at the first sight of snow. As I get older I get more and more concerned about the number of warnings that are issued about bad weather to come. Most turn out to be nothing at all. Your older photos here really are splendidl cheerful too.

  11. They are such happy pictures of your mother. I especially like the one of her sitting on a sledge with fir trees in the background.

  12. Agnes is a copy/paste of her mom!!
Love your mom sitting on that sleigh by the road side.
Here, when there is a snowstorm,
    everyone goes to work
and if you're late, they cut your paycheck.
No appreciation for the effort, and the risk...
If your mom wore pants, she must have been quite chilly to make this compromise to fashion.
That's ow my own mom was!!

  13. I had the same thought as you: in all the OLD photos, everyone dressed up even in the snow. This seems true for every blog I've visited.

  14. Our familys old "black and whites" are my favorites. Just seems to bring back memories of when life as a lot simplier.
Just checking back for any new posts you may have written.
I’ve been a follower on your blog for a while now and would like to invite you to visit my blog and follow me back. Sorry I took so long for the invitation.

  15. Beautiful! I love to look at old photos...and I agree, they always dressed so well back then!

Thank you for your comments...I mean really...Thank you for taking the time to do that.. how nice of you!
