Broken Bones...and turns in the road...

Ahh... you know that they say things happen in three's. Dang, I sure don't like that feeling that the other foot is about to fall, after two incidents are already under our belt.

As I previously mentioned, we did have two mishaps on Christmas Eve... and thought we were going to dodge a bullet for the infamous 3rd incident... not the case.

As I mentioned in the previous post, we counted ourselves fortunate to have one more Christmas Eve with Mom and our rather large clan. So after everyone left her house, my Mom and sister Jill were able to finally go to bed.

I think I need to mention, my Mom lives in Vegas most of the year, and is here at her home in Washington during the summer months from June to August. She had planned on being here for Christmas, and going back to Vegas for New Years, and some parties with her friends.

OK, back to the story. Mom who is 86, got up around 2AM to go to the bathroom...yes, you know where I am going with this, don't you...

Ah huh, yes... she fell and broke her hip, dare I say..Oh crap!

So on Christmas day she has surgery and gets 3 screws in her hip. We chucked our Christmas day plans and hung around the hospital. After a long day, my brother and his wife, and my husband and I felt like we were living the "Christmas Story" movie scene...at the end of Christmas day we were at a authentic Chinese restaurant, eating duck, though ours came headless!

Today Mom left the hospital to go to rehab. We have had daily phone calls and visits between 5 siblings, and even had a family meeting. We are fortunate that 4 of the 5 of us live in the area, and that my sister Jill was here from Vegas for Christmas, and was staying at Mom's when it happened. Jill lives in Vegas, where she is a teacher.

On top of all of this, my sister Jill is getting married in Las Vegas at our Mom's house on January 10th... Oh yeah, now double crap.

A wedding just about 2 weeks away, and most of us have plane tickets, the wedding is planned.. and the family Matriarch is not going anywhere any time soon, especially not to Vegas....

After much discussion it was decided.. the Wedding will go on. So.. we will have a wedding, and it is so unfortunate Mom can't be there. She will be in rehab for weeks, and we pray she works hard to get on the mend fast..(Prayers asked for and appreciated!!!)

So, that was our family Christmas....how was your Christmas????

Recent changes, and update as of 12-29-2009

A private wedding is on for Jill and Douglas in January.
The party will follow some time in the spring, so Mom can be there.
We all feel better, knowing she will have a reason to get better fast!

My tickets are canceled.

  1. WOW! Between the gashes and broken hips, you had your "everything happens in 3's!" So it should be smooth sailing from here. I'm glad your holidays were good! Our family does a gift exchange this year, we have a $10 limit and had 13 people playing this year, too! Our gifts are usually nice though, we avoid the "white elephant" game, LOL!
    Have a happy new year!!

  3. Oh my! Didn't expect to read about this when I came over here. I'm so sorry to hear about your mom. But it sounds like the surgery went as well as can be expected and she is on the road to recovery. I know from personal experience the difficulties that are associated with aging parents. You and your siblings are going to be busy!

Here's a bit of good news for you. You won my Perricone Cold Plasma Giveaway. Cold Plasma is a new product from Perricone that is suppose to "help" women of our age keep our skin younger looking! Woo hoo! I sent you an e-mail (but I can't remember if I put a "subject" title in there. So I'm hoping it doesn't get put in your junk file.) Anyway, send me an e-mail letting me know the address where you would like your gift sent.

Take care, and my thoughts and prayers are being sent your way for your mom!

  4. I am a big believer of the "happens in 3's" thing because it does happen in 3 to me so many times. After my brother in law passed had extremely bad luck for several weeks! Lost Drivers license while traveling...canncelled flight with an overnight stay and lost my voice! Not to mention so many other weird things happen to me.
I will pray for your mother's speedy recovery and your family's well being!

  7. Oh honey I'm so sorry. Hopefully she will be on the mend soon. Have fun at the wedding and dont't worry too much about mom, she'll be taken good care of and you could use a vacation even if for a couple of days. Enjoy and I'll be sending good karma your way.

  8. Oh my gosh Jan it sounds like one of those you do not want to repeat scenarios! Well mine was just a little different, but along the same line...My mom had surgery just before Christmas and had been laid up for months with spinal stenosis, her nerves were pinched off in her spine. She hurt so bad that none of us could stand to be around her, because she gets hateful when she hurts....
Anyway mom is doing good and soon we are about to be normal again after a very abnormal 6 months! I don't want a repeat either and my mom is 86 also. Hoping our New Years is much better for all of us!

  9. I'm sorry to hear about your mom - I will be praying for a quick recovery! Is there anyway a webcam could be set up at the wedding and she could watch it from the hospital? Just a thought....

  10. Boy! Your Mom's Christmas this year sounds like MY Christmas LAST year. gah! What a nightmare. And like you I'm still waiting for that third foot to fall. I've had the two bad things happen with my horse, so I was especially scared to get back on her the day after Christmas. Whew. I'm glad that's over. lol!

I'm so sorry your Mom's having to go through such a terrible and painful ordeal during the holidays. But she should count her blessings, that she has such a large, caring family to be there for her during this time, though.

Here's hoping that 2010 brings much more happiness, health, safety, and lots of good things happening!

  11. Yes, three years ago we spent Christmas eve with my wife's dad in an emergency room. It was a bummer and we had Christmas two weeks later when he was able to come. I guess you don't realize what can happen but it does. Your mother does well to be 86 and getting around. I hope rehab will help her to get back up to normal again. Be sure an take care of yourself during a time like this as you can get exhausted.

  12. Oh wow-- prayers going out for Mom and y'all! Our Christmas was *thankfully* quiet, no bloodshed or bruises even. (And with a 4 yr old and 5 yr old, thats no mean feat! LOL)

Sure hope your Mom is tip top again soon. And that no more run of threes- unless they are AWESOME threes!- head your way!

    Happy New Year!

  16. I'm so sorry to hear about your mom! That's cool that your sister and her fiance will have a party in the Spring so your mom can be there - sorry about the canceled trip. At least you got your 'threes' taken care of at the end of the year, instead of starting off the New Year with them - that should result in 2010 being a great year, no? ;)

Happy New Year, Jan! :) I'll keep your mom in my thoughts and prayers!
